Wellington Monument

We went to the town of Wellington because we wanted to buy Wellington boots (wellies) in Wellington :P
……we couldn’t see anywhere there to get some though ;>.>

So instead we went up to the top of the hills overlooking the town to see the Wellington Monument :)

The monument is signposted quite well from the town to get there by car, but the entrance to the car park has no sign to let you know you’re approaching it, so it’s very easy to go right past it and need to turn around :/

From the car park it’s a nice walk along the path through the trees towards the monument ahead.

The monument is the tallest 3 sided obelisk in the world and was built to honour the Duke of Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Waterloo.

There is a staircase inside the monument which goes up to a viewing platform, but unfortunately it’s been closed since 2007 due to major restoration works being needed.

The monument is now owned by the National Trust so hopefully someday it will be restored and re-opened to the public again :)
